“Strange isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives.
When he isn’t around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?”
(Clarence from the movie: It’s a Wonderful Life)
It’s a few days before Christmas and one of my favorite traditions – dating back to my childhood, is watching the movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” from start to finish. No movie impacts my soul more deeply than this one does. There are so many rich themes, teaching points, and life changing moments, that one could watch this movie every day for the month of December and still glean new wisdom from it every time. If you have never seen this movie, do yourself a favor, and watch it today!
George Bailey is the main character in the movie – he has big dreams and is living in a small town. Every time it seems he is on his way to pursuing his dreams, some major event leads him down a different path. These events challenge his character and integrity, and he willingly sacrifices his dreams for the greater good of his family, friends, and even his customers. Finally, George finds himself in a position where he has given all he has. He is fed up from serving others. He is on the brink of financial disaster and possibly jail time. He thinks he is a failure and all his life has been wasted. He makes a wish to Heaven that he was never born.
Heaven honors George’s request…
If you’ve seen the movie, you know what happens next. If you haven’t, I won’t spoil it for you. I will, however, challenge you to look at your life and imagine you had not been born. Think of all the lives you have touched. Think of all the “little” acts of kindness to people you have done. Think of all the people you came into contact with. You will see the value you bring to the people in your circles. You will see the “little” acts of kindness exponentially impacting lives for the better. You will see that you indeed have had a wonderful life. One that is yours. One that was given to you to do what you have done to this point and so much more!
Without you in this world, there is a gaping hole that no one else can fill but you. You matter more than you think. This world needs you in it. There are many people still in need of you. There is much work for you do. Go and live the life you were meant to live and never doubt the value you bring to this world.
Merry Christmas to you and yours.
