“If you want to grow, then spend time with great people; visit great places; attend great events; read great books; listen to great tapes.” Elmer Towns
(quoted from John Maxwell’s conversation with Elmer Towns in the 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth)
Welcome to the middle of January 2019. Most people who made New Year’s resolutions have already lost their resolve and have abandoned the hard work of thinking up their goal for the year. 2019 will be the same as 2018. They will experience no growth. They will fill up their tanks with regret and reinforce their limiting beliefs that they can’t do whatever it was they were resolved to do. They will remain where they are, wishing they were somewhere else, with no plan in place or desire to make the changes needed, to get where they want to go.
However, that is not you. You are reading this blog because you are hungry to grow. You are dedicated to something more in this life than average. You desire and hunger for your very best life and becoming the best version of yourself. Maybe you are at a place where you are wondering how to grow this year. Maybe you are new to personal growth and don’t know where to begin. Elmer Towns shared this timeless wisdom with John C. Maxwell, “If you want to grow, then spend time with great people; visit great places; attend great events; read great books; listen to great tapes.”
Elmer Towns just gave you a fundamentally sound personal growth plan for the rest of your life. Personal development is an investment of your time. The amount of time you are willing to invest in yourself is directly proportionate to your desired level of growth. You cannot expect to achieve great things in your life if you invest little to no time in your growth to reach great heights.
What should you invest your time in?
Invest your time with great people. Not good people. Not average people. Certainly not people who drag you down. Invest your time in great people. Who is someone you consider great? Who is on your list of great people you want to meet? Learn from greatness, apply their lessons and watch how you will grow.
Visit great places – Take trips to see famous museums, cities, natural historic sites can touch your soul. Think about the sacrifices made while standing on the battlefields of Gettysburg, the Normandy, France Cemetery, ancient ruins in Rome, the Vatican or a local treasure in your hometown. Taking moments to meditate, sit and think, or taking a tour, will create new levels of awareness in yourself that will inspire your growth.
Part 2 can be found here….where we will look at the remaining three items Elmer Towns shared.
For now, take action this week by:
- – deciding on 4 great people you want to meet this year (1 per quarter) and
- – pick 1 great place to add to your vacation.
Personal development is an investment of your time.
